The SKYWARN Storm Spotter Program was created by the National Weather Service (NWS) to improve warning services. The NWS needs real-time reports of hail size, wind damage, flash flooding, heavy rain, tornadoes, and waterspouts to effectively warn the public of inclement weather. Even as new technology allows the NWS to issue warnings with more lead time, spotters will always be needed as links between radar indications of severe weather and ground truth. Storm Spotter volunteers serve as severe weather spotters for the NWS and local emergency management programs, and generally have two things in common - an interest in the weather and a desire to serve their community..
You don’t need numbers to know that radio communication saves lives.
Think of how vital radio communication is to the ship that’s sending out a distress call, or for the airplane experiencing technical issues, or for the first responders to a natural disaster. Or, what about people working in isolation in high-risk work environments, like corrections personnel, or a team of backcountry firefighters? A functional radio communications system can mean the difference between life and death. When time is of the essence and someone needs immediate medical attention, a radio carries the promise of a better outcome, so it is important to understand how they work and what they can and cannot do, and what rules govern the use of these systems.
Our communities are full of people who want to help. We train volunteers who want to provide disaster assistance to their local communities and then as trained volunteers we work to help the people providing services with the people who need them. Come connect with people in new ways.
Volunteers help and/or respond to an average of 70,000 types of different disasters a year....
35% of volunteers in our Country are age 26 and younger....
More than half of all Nurses and Nursing Students volunteer their time each year....
